Why We Celebrate Flag Day: Honoring the Stars and Stripes

Every year on June 14, Americans pause to celebrate Flag Day—a tribute to the adoption of the United States flag in 1777 and a symbol of freedom, unity, and national pride.

A Brief History of Flag Day

The origin of Flag Day dates back to June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress passed a resolution stating:

“Resolved, that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field.”

The red, white, and blue design has evolved over the centuries, but its meaning has only grown deeper. The 13 stripes honor the original colonies, while each star represents a state in the Union.

Although Flag Day was celebrated in pockets across the country for years, it wasn’t until 1916 that President Woodrow Wilson officially established June 14 as Flag Day. In 1949, Congress recognized it as a permanent observance.

Why the Flag Matters

The American flag has flown over battlefields, inspired generations, and offered hope during times of crisis. From being raised at Iwo Jima to being planted on the moon, the flag tells a story of resilience and aspiration. It's more than fabric—it's a living symbol of the American journey.

Ways to Celebrate Flag Day

  • Fly the American flag proudly at your home or business.

  • Teach children about the flag’s history and significance.

  • Attend local ceremonies or parades.

  • Take a moment to reflect on what the flag represents—liberty, justice, and the sacrifices made to protect them.
