The Milford Mine Disaster: Minnesota’s Deadliest Mining Tragedy

Deep in the heart of Minnesota’s iron range lies a story both tragic and unforgettable—the Milford Mine Disaster of 1924. Located near Crosby, Minnesota, this event stands as the deadliest mining accident in the state’s history and remains a sobering reminder of the dangers faced by miners in the early 20th century.

On February 5, 1924, a routine day underground turned catastrophic when a blast broke through the nearby Foley Lake, unleashing a torrent of icy water into the mine shafts. Within minutes, the tunnels flooded. Of the 48 men working that day, only 7 made it out alive. The rest—fathers, brothers, sons—were trapped and lost beneath the surface.

The disaster rocked the region and led to renewed calls for safety reforms in Minnesota’s mining industry. Today, the Milford Mine Memorial Park honors those who perished with a peaceful lakeside memorial, interpretive signs, and a walking trail that traces the story of that harrowing day.

As part of our Minnesota Railroad Tour, we’ll visit the Soo Line Depot in Crosby, where you’ll learn even more about the mining history of the region, the people who lived it, and the legacy of the Milford Mine. It’s a powerful opportunity to connect with Minnesota’s past and reflect on the lives affected by one of its darkest chapters.
