Celebrating 250 Years of American Independence β Month by Month
As we commemorate the 250th anniversary of our nationβs founding, we look back on October 1775 β a month when Americaβs fight for liberty took to the sea, and the dream of independence continued to gather strength.
The Birth of the American Navy
One of the most significant developments in October 1775 was the creation of the Continental Navy. On October 13, the Second Continental Congress officially authorized the outfitting of two armed vessels to intercept British supply ships β a modest beginning that would grow into the mighty United States Navy.
Though small and under-resourced, these early ships represented something far greater than firepower: the determination of a people to defend their liberty on every front β even the open sea.
Within weeks, Congress appointed Esek Hopkins as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Navy and commissioned John Paul Jones, who would go on to become one of Americaβs most legendary naval heroes.
King George III Doubles Down
While Congress built its navy and prepared for the long road ahead, events across the Atlantic took a darker turn. In October 1775, King George III addressed Parliament, declaring that the American rebellion was being driven by a βdesperate conspiracyβ and must be forcefully crushed.
He pledged to send more troops and refused any negotiation that did not involve the colonies' total submission. This harsh message further convinced many colonists that reconciliation was no longer possible. The King had spoken β and he had no intention of listening.
The Siege of Boston Continues
Back on land, General George Washington maintained the siege of Boston, keeping British forces bottled up in the city. Though short on gunpowder and supplies, the Continental Army remained firm. Washington worked tirelessly to train and organize the men, slowly transforming volunteers and militiamen into a real army. His leadership in October set the tone for what would come β months of endurance, discipline, and strategy.
πΊπΈ October 1775 was a turning point. It marked the rise of American power on the seas, a hardened enemy response, and a people more determined than ever to claim their freedom. The courage of our founders reminds us that liberty is not given β itβs earned through sacrifice and unity.
