Americaβs 250th Anniversary β Month by Month Through the Revolution
As we mark 250 years since the founding of our great nation, we look back on November 1775, a month when the American Revolution expanded beyond New England and into the Southern colonies. The fight for liberty was no longer regional β it was quickly becoming a full-blown movement across all thirteen colonies.
The South Joins the Fight
In early November, Patriots in Virginia and the Carolinas began organizing more actively against British rule. British forces, under Royal Governor Lord Dunmore, clashed with Virginia militiamen at the Battle of Kempβs Landing on November 15, and shortly after, tensions escalated at the Battle of Great Bridge (early December).
These events marked the beginning of real military conflict in the South, showing that the cause of liberty was spreading β and that the British were losing their grip far beyond Boston.
Lord Dunmoreβs Proclamation
Perhaps the most dramatic event of the month came on November 7, 1775, when Lord Dunmore issued a proclamation offering freedom to any enslaved person who would escape their Patriot masters and join the British army.
While this was a calculated military move, it sent shockwaves through the colonies. Some enslaved people seized the opportunity to escape bondage, while many Patriot leaders saw it as a dangerous escalation.
Though complicated and controversial, Dunmoreβs Proclamation highlighted the moral contradictions within the American struggle β and planted seeds that would grow into larger questions about freedom, race, and justice in the new republic.
Marines Are Born
On November 10, 1775, the Continental Marines were officially established by the Second Continental Congress. These elite fighters were created to serve aboard Navy vessels and assist in ship-to-ship combat and amphibious landings.
This marks the birth of the United States Marine Corps, an institution that has proudly served our country ever since.
πΊπΈ November 1775 showed that the American Revolution was no longer confined to New England β it was a national cause. With fire in their hearts and unity growing, Patriots across the colonies prepared to stand together for liberty.
