Born in a Tavern, Forged in Battle: The Founding of the U.S. Marine Corps
Celebrating America 250
On November 10, 1775, in the midst of revolution and uncertainty, the Continental Congress passed a resolution calling for the creation of two battalions of Marines. That bold move—made at Tun Tavern in Philadelphia—marked the official birth of the United States Marine Corps, an elite fighting force destined to play a crucial role in the defense of our young nation.
The Marines were formed to serve both on land and at sea, capable of boarding enemy ships, enforcing discipline aboard naval vessels, and launching amphibious assaults. Their very first mission came in March of 1776, when Continental Marines joined the Navy in a daring raid on the British-held island of Nassau in the Bahamas. It was a swift and strategic success, and a defining moment in the legacy of the Corps.
From that point forward, the Marines became synonymous with toughness, honor, and duty. They have served with distinction in every major American conflict, from Tripoli to Belleau Wood, Iwo Jima to Fallujah. They are often the first to fight, carrying with them the Marine motto, Semper Fidelis—Always Faithful.
As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Marine Corps, we honor not only its founding, but the generations of brave men and women who have upheld its proud traditions. Through grit, sacrifice, and unwavering resolve, the Marines have proven time and again that they are ready to defend freedom wherever it’s threatened.
The Marines were born before our nation was, and they’ve been defending it ever since.
