1. The City Reversed a River 🌊

Yes, really! In 1900, Chicago engineers pulled off one of the most impressive (and strange) feats in U.S. history by reversing the flow of the Chicago River. It originally flowed into Lake Michigan, but was redirected to flow away from it to protect the city’s water supply. It’s a jaw-dropping example of early urban engineering—and something you’ll learn more about on our tour!

2. Chicago Was Home to the First Open-Heart Surgery ❤️‍🩹

Long before Chicago was known for its food and sports, it was making medical history. In 1893, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams performed the first successful open-heart surgery without modern anesthesia—right in the heart of the city. It’s one of the many fascinating facts about Chicago’s role in innovation and science.

3. Chicago is home to the first the Ferris Wheel 🎡

The world’s very first Ferris wheel debuted at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. It was built to rival the Eiffel Tower, and it stood 264 feet tall! Chicago’s fairgrounds once dazzled millions—and many of those same sites are on our route today.

4. There Are More Than 570 Parks 🌳

Chicago is more than skyscrapers and busy streets. With over 570 parks—including Grant Park, Millennium Park, and the massive Lincoln Park—the city offers endless green space. On our tour, you’ll discover just how much nature is tucked between those famous city blocks.

5. Chicago Has a Secret Pedway System 🚶‍♂️

Beneath the hustle and bustle of downtown Chicago is a 5-mile network of underground tunnels and walkways that connect buildings, train stations, and shops. It’s like a secret city under the city—and most tourists don’t even know it’s there!
