Honoring America's Path to Independence — Month by Month

As we continue to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, we look back to September 1775 — a month marked by bold action, growing confidence among the colonies, and a deepening resolve that the fight for freedom was not just possible, but necessary.

Colonial Forces Go on the Offensive

By September, the Revolutionary War was no longer just about defense — it was about taking control. In a bold and risky move, the Continental Congress authorized an expedition to seize Canada from British control. The goal: to deny the British a launching point for attacks from the north and to encourage Canadian colonists to join the cause of liberty.

Two separate expeditions were launched:

  • One led by General Richard Montgomery, targeting Montreal.

  • The second, an incredibly treacherous trek through the Maine wilderness, was led by Benedict Arnold and aimed at Quebec.

Though the campaign would ultimately fall short, the decision to take the fight beyond the colonies showed the growing confidence and ambition of the American patriots.

Naval Beginnings: Seeds of a Continental Navy

September 1775 also marked the beginnings of what would become the United States Navy. Although not formally established until October, Congress began discussing plans to arm ships and intercept British supply lines. Colonial leaders recognized that controlling the seas would be crucial in the fight for independence.

This month sowed the seeds of a Navy that would one day rival the world’s greatest fleets — a bold step for a group of rebels who only months earlier had no organized military at all.

Unity Strengthens, Spirit Grows

Throughout the colonies, the sense of shared struggle and shared destiny continued to grow. Committees of Safety and local militias strengthened their coordination. Supplies were gathered. More citizens pledged loyalty to the cause. The people were no longer just resisting — they were organizing, planning, and preparing for the long road ahead.

🇺🇸 September 1775 was a month of momentum — a time when America moved from defense to action, from uncertain to unstoppable. It reminds us that courage isn’t just about standing firm — it’s about moving forward.
